How to Choose a Pallet Wrapping Machine
Compare the load movement, handling method, output target and available floor space before comparing model names. A suitable wrapper must apply the required film pattern without making the pallet unstable or creating a bottleneck around loading and unloading.
Quick Answer
Turntable wrappers suit stable pallet loads that can rotate. Rotary-arm wrappers keep the load stationary and suit unstable, heavy or conveyor-fed pallets after clearance and guarding are reviewed. Mobile robot wrappers travel to pallets in different locations. Automatic wrapping lines suit repeatable conveyor flow where loading, film attachment, cutting and discharge are defined as one system.
What Is a Pallet Wrapping Machine?
A pallet wrapping machine applies stretch film around a palletized load to create a repeatable wrap pattern before storage or transport. The machine may rotate the pallet, rotate a film arm around a stationary pallet, travel around the load, or operate as part of an automatic conveyor line.
The wrapper is only one part of the result. Pallet geometry, product stability, film grade, pre-stretch, wrap count, applied force and the handling route determine whether the final load is acceptable.
Four Main Types of Pallet Wrapping Machines
Turntable Pallet Wrapper
The pallet rotates on a turntable while the film carriage travels vertically. This is a practical starting point for stable loads and routine warehouse or factory dispatch.
Rotary Arm Pallet Wrapper
The pallet remains stationary while a rotating arm carries the film around it. Review arm clearance, load access, guarding and any conveyor or line-control interface.
Mobile Robot Pallet Wrapper
A self-propelled machine travels around the pallet. It can serve multiple wrapping locations, but every cycle needs a suitable floor, route and clearance around the load.
Fully Automatic Pallet Wrapping Line
An automatic line coordinates conveyors, pallet detection, the wrapping cycle and the confirmed film attachment and cutting functions. Define upstream and downstream signals before selecting the machine.
Comparison Table
| Machine type | Load stability | Throughput | Mobility | Floor space | Automation level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turntable | Load must rotate safely | Low to medium; application-specific | Fixed | Compact machine area plus loading access | Manual film handling to configured automation | Stable pallet loads |
| Rotary arm | Load remains stationary | Medium to high; application-specific | Fixed | Arm envelope, guarding and access required | Standalone or line-integrated | Unstable, heavy or conveyor-fed loads |
| Mobile robot | Load remains stationary | Include travel and charging time | Mobile | Clear route around every pallet | Operator positions machine; automatic wrap cycle | Distributed pallet locations |
| Automatic line | Defined by selected wrapping platform | High-volume projects after cycle study | Fixed | Largest complete-system footprint | Conveyor and film handling by confirmed scope | Repeatable in-line pallet flow |
How to Choose by Pallet Weight
Weight is a machine-rating and handling requirement, not the only selection factor. Confirm the maximum loaded pallet weight, how it reaches the wrapper and whether the floor, turntable, conveyor and scale options are rated for the same load. A larger turntable does not automatically provide a higher load rating.
How to Choose by Load Stability
Observe the complete load during acceleration, rotation and transport. Loose cartons, bags, tall light products, uneven layers and a high centre of gravity may be unsuitable for rotation. A top platen can help only when its contact area and pressure suit the goods; otherwise compare a rotary arm or mobile wrapper that keeps the pallet stationary.
How to Choose by Daily Pallet Volume
Count accepted wrapped pallets per working period, not only the machine wrap time. Include forklift approach, pallet positioning, film attachment, cycle time, film cutting, removal, film-roll changes, travel between loads and charging. For an automatic line, include upstream accumulation and downstream release signals.
How to Choose by Film Consumption
Ask the supplier to define the carriage and pre-stretch calculation. Compare film consumption on the same pallet with the same film grade and accepted containment result. Record film weight per pallet, damaged film, rewraps and rejected loads. A higher stated ratio is not useful if the film, carriage or load cannot maintain the required result.
How to Choose by Factory Layout
Mark the loading route, operator position, emergency access and the largest moving envelope on a layout. Turntables need loading clearance; rotary arms need a protected arm envelope; mobile robots need a complete route around each load and access to charging; automatic lines need conveyor accumulation, guarding and maintenance access.
Turntable vs Rotary Arm
Choose a turntable when the pallet can rotate safely and a compact, straightforward wrapping station fits the process. Choose a rotary arm when the pallet should remain stationary or when the project requires conveyor integration around a stationary load. The final decision still depends on working envelope, guarding, loading and target output.
Robot Wrapper vs Fixed Pallet Wrapper
A robot wrapper moves between pallet locations and can reduce the need to bring every load to one station. A fixed wrapper creates a defined work area and can simplify a repeatable handling route. Compare total labour and cycle time, including travel and charging for the robot and pallet transfer for the fixed station.
When Should You Use a Fully Automatic System?
Consider a fully automatic system when pallet dimensions and flow are sufficiently controlled, the required output justifies conveyor integration, and film attachment, wrapping, cutting and release must run with limited operator handling. Document every automatic step in the quotation; the phrase “automatic wrapper” alone does not define the complete line.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of pallet wrapper should I choose?
Choose by load movement first. Use a turntable for stable loads that can rotate, a rotary arm for loads that should remain stationary, a mobile robot for pallet locations spread across a work area, and an automatic line when conveyor flow and automatic film handling are part of the confirmed scope.
Is a turntable pallet wrapper suitable for unstable loads?
A turntable requires the complete load to rotate safely. Tall, light, loose or unstable loads may need a top platen, another stabilizing method, or a stationary-load platform. Review the actual pallet rather than using height alone.
What is the difference between a turntable and rotary arm wrapper?
A turntable rotates the pallet while the film carriage moves vertically. A rotary-arm wrapper keeps the pallet stationary while the arm carries film around it. The choice affects load stability, working clearance, loading and line integration.
When should I use a robot pallet wrapper?
Use a mobile robot when pallets are wrapped in different locations and each load can provide a clear, suitable route around its perimeter. Include travel between pallets, charging and floor conditions when comparing productivity.
Can pallet wrappers reduce stretch film consumption?
A correctly configured pre-stretch carriage and repeatable wrap program can reduce variation and may reduce film used per accepted load. Confirm the result with the same film, pallet and containment requirement; do not compare film weight without checking load stability.
What is pre-stretch?
Pre-stretch is the controlled elongation of stretch film in the carriage before it is applied to the load. The carriage, film grade, ratio and applied containment force must be considered together.
What does 200% or 250% pre-stretch mean?
Under the common elongation convention, 200% pre-stretch means one unit of film is extended to three units of total length, and 250% means it is extended to 3.5 units. Suppliers may label ratios differently, so the quotation should define the calculation and the supplied carriage.
How many pallets can a wrapping machine wrap per hour?
There is no universal hourly figure. Output depends on load height, wrap count, turntable or arm speed, film handling, loading and unloading. FY-PWPM01 lists 25-40 pallets per hour as a reference configuration, not a guarantee for every load.
Do I need an automatic film cutting system?
Automatic cutting and clamping are useful when the process must minimize operator film handling or connect to a conveyor line. A machine with an automatic wrap cycle does not necessarily include automatic film attachment or cutting.
How do I choose a pallet wrapping machine for export packaging?
Define the pallet geometry, stability, route and handling risks first. Then specify the film, wrap pattern, top protection, edge protection and required containment. Confirm the accepted package by trial and document the final machine and film settings.
